Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Visa Card Review – Unique Reward Schedule?

Previously known as the Priority Club, the IHG Rewards Club is the planet’s largest hotel chain credit card, at least when it comes to number of rooms. By the way, IHG is an acronym for InterContinental Hotels Group. IHG operates 4600 hotels in more than 100 countries. Because of this, the Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Visa Card is a powerful addition to your rewards credit card arsenal. Especially beneficial for world travelers, this card comes loaded with attractive benefits.

Once approved for your Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Visa Card, and once you spend at least $1000 within the first 90 days, you will receive 60,000 IHG sign-up bonus points. In general, IHG reward points are worth about 6/10 of a penny per. So your 60,000 reward points translates into about $360 cash value. That’s considerable, especially because you get it just for signing up, getting approved and spending some money that you probably would anyway.

Aside from the initial 60,000 reward points you get for signing up for the Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Visa Card and spending the minimum requirement, you will earn:

  • Five points for every dollar that you spend on IHG hotel stay purchases;

  • Two points for every dollar that you spend at grocery stores, gas stations and restaurants;

  • One point for every dollar that you spend on everything else;

For the first year, there is no annual fee. After that, the annual fee for the Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Visa Card is $49.00. That’s a little bit less than a lot of other Chase cards, and the $49.00 will seem quite trivial when you consider the other benefits that you receive. For one, every year on your anniversary date (when you activated your card), you receive one free night at any applicable IHG hotel. Each year, the offer from the previous year is voided and a new offer for the new year begins. You’ll have to schedule your reservations in advance by calling 888-211-9874.

There are absolutely no foreign transaction fees associated with your Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Visa Card. A lot of the competition will charge you a flat 3% fee for every transaction you initiate outside of the U.S.. So, if you are a frequent international traveler, this card can make a lot of sense for you. You will also get 10% IHG rewards points rebate for all points that you redeem at IHG Hotels. For example, if you use to 22,000 reward points for a night’s stay in an IHG hotel, you will receive 2200 reward points back into your account. his will take 4 to 6 weeks to show up, but it’s still an extra discount for you to consider.

The Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Visa Card, as a Visa Signature credit card, also comes with an array of features including:

  • Lost luggage reimbursement;

  • Rental car collision insurance;

  • Emergency travel assistance with roadside dispatch including fuel delivery, towing and more;

  • Retail purchase security;

  • Emergency cash disbursement;

  • Fraud protection;

  • Emergency card replacement services;

APR rates associated with the Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Visa Card are:

The APR for general purchases is set at 15.24%. Balance transfers APR is 15.24%. The cash advance APR and the overdraft advance APR are both set at 19.24%. You’ll want to avoid the penalty APR of 29.99% by:

  1. Always making at least the minimum payments due, on time, every time;

  2. Not making a payment that gets returned “unpaid”;

  3. Not exceeding your credit limit;

Be aware that, as with most cards, Chase retains the rights to cancel your card at any time, for any reason. Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Visa Card cardholders are required to maintain an active, on-file email address for receiving Chase and IHG promotions and specials.

The annual free night’s stay at a hotel must be redeemed in an IHG® Rewards Club Family of Brands establishment. It wouldn’t make much sense for IHG to pay for your stay in one of their competitor’s chains. You will receive credit for one standard room, for one night only, taxes are included. You may not redeem for cash, transfer, re-credit or extend your Free Night reward points. And you will still be responsible for any cancellation fees that you initiate outside of the hotel’s accepted cancellation regulations.

On balance transfers with the Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Visa Card, there is a fee attached of $5 or 3% of the transaction, whichever is greater (of course). On cash advances, there is a $10 or 3% charge. As stated, there are no charges for foreign transactions. Late fees are assessed as follows:

  • For balances under $100, the late fee will be up to $15.

  • For balances more than $100, but less than $250, the fee will be up to $25.

  • For balances of $250 or more, the late fee will be $35.

  • There will also be $35 fees attached to any returned payment or any returned check.

In all, the Chase IHG Rewards Club Select Visa Card offers a unique rewards schedule that can definitely benefit those who frequently travel, especially international travelers.
