Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard Review – Many AAdvantages?

Citi is arguably the largest provider of consumer credit cards. The company holds the distinction of servicing more than 150 million credit card accounts. The Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard offers a zero interest introductory rate for well-qualified applicants, and the regular interest rates range between 13.99% and 21.99% APR. Note that the interest rate is variable and subject to change for a variety of reasons including late payments.

Benefits of the Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard

  • Your first eligible bag can be checked free, as well as the first bag for up to four of your travel companions. This can end up being a huge savings when you consider the fact that baggage fees show no sign of leaving anytime soon.
  • Board with group 1 travelers. Get on the plane and get settled in, using the extra time that you have getting ready for the flight.
  • $100 discount on American Airlines for each year that you are a Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard member. Savings enough as it stands, but it increases by $100 each year. There are restrictions of course, in that you must spend $30,000 in purchases and you must renew card membership.
  • Earn miles when you use miles. Almost unheard of, you can actually earn more miles when you use miles to pay for travel.
  • 2 miles for every dollar you spend on American Airlines purchases. Flying American Airlines increases the miles that you earn.
  • 25% on in-flight purchases (food and beverages). Excellent savings and useful when you are on long flights.
  • Fly while using fewer miles to travel. Use fewer miles to get to where you’re going when you fly with American.

The Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard is backed by one of the largest financial institutions in the world. Citbank serves in excess of 200 million customers in more than 100 countries. Typical mileage earnings with this card are 1 mile per dollar spent, except in the case of traveling with American Airlines where the reward is double that. The miles are redeemable for free air travel on American (don’t forget that you earn miles when you use miles!), your hotel stay and you can even use the miles to rent a car at your destination. There are no blackout dates applicable and the free travel includes flights with American Airlines, American Eagle, American Connection and other carriers that may be participating in the program which may change from time-to-time.

With the Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard as with most reward cards of this nature, you can expect to pay the higher interest rates on these types of cards that you do not typically see associated with the non-rewards cards. That being the case, if you do not expect to pay the card balance off at the end of the month, you may want to consider one of the lower interest rate cards offered by Citi. Still, the Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard is a good card to have for the benefits being offered for its use. Whether o=r not you choose this card really depends on your present financial situation.

An important fact worth noting too is that British Airways, one of American’s partners, imposes huge fuel surcharges when you use the American rewards cards for travel on that airline. As a matter of fact, in some cases, you can expect to pay as much for the surcharge as you would pay for a coach ticket. This is noted so that you are well-informed that when you travel on British Airways using one of these award cards, the actual cost of your flight is not free. Consider traveling on one of the many flights to London that American Airlines itself offers, rather than flying British Airways. Also note that Citi imposes a 3% foreign transaction fee when using the Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard. While it is duly noted that the American Airlines miles are indeed valuable, they are not worth the three percent transaction fee associated with foreign travel and any reward you might have otherwise realized is lost because of this. In a case like this, you would perhaps be better off to save your miles and use a different card when traveling abroad, or at least, just don’t use your miles to pay for the travel.

The Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard allows for a maximum earning of 100,000 miles in a calendar year, but mileage expires when there has been no activity on your account for three consecutive years. There is no apparent distinction between this card and other AAdvantage cards except that the Platinum Select card offers you a bonus of 30,000 miles when you use the card to make $1000 in purchases during the first 3 months. Additionally, there is no preset spending limit associated with the card. If you are in the market for this card, keep in mind that it can get expensive. There is a $95.00 annual fee associated with the card, which is waived for the first year it is active. While the initial bonus miles and statement credit will get your attention, those who will benefit the most from owning this particular card are those who travel frequently. If you do not fall into that category, you will likely find better alternatives with another card program. Again, it really depends on your financial standing and how you plan to pay the bills each month.

The bottom line with the Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard, as with any other that you may be looking at obtaining, is that you have to weigh the rewards that the card offers, along with the cost of ownership before making a final decision. You should really be doing this with any credit card that you are shopping for anyway. If you travel a great deal and are in the position of paying the balance down each month, the Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage World MasterCard may be the card of your dreams. However, if there’s a chance that you will need to carry a balance, you may be better off looking at other options as opposed to losing the benefits in card-related interest fees each month which will vary depending on if you are making purchases, or taking cash advances off of the card.

Reading some of the card related forums can help you to find real-world examples from people who are using the card and posting their experiences in using it.
