Ducks Unlimited Discover Card Review – Catering to Duck Lovers and Hunters?

Discover card has unveiled a new card associated with Ducks Unlimited, the ‘Ultimate 360º Water Fowl organization that’s quite popular with the duck-hunting or admirer crowd. Ducks Unlimited is the ‘go-to’ place for duck hunters and lovers, providing a variety of hunting tips, decoy strategies, migration reports, and more. The brand is popular in the United States, and the Ducks Unlimited Discover Card has joined the organization as a “proud partner” according to the Ducks Unlimited website.

To attract new card accounts, Ducks Unlimited and Discover are providing three card designs that consumers can choose from; a plain green logo, or two options for card design created by Jim Killen, a famous wildlife – especially waterfowl – artwork. Before you ask, yes, the Ducks Unlimited Discover Card does support wetland conservation through its website.

So what does the Ducks Unlimited Discover Card offer that the “regular” Discover credit card doesn’t?  Nothing really, other than the Ducks Unlimited logo on the card, and of course, your opportunity to join one of the largest waterfowl organizations in the United States.

Ducks Unlimited Discover Card Benefits

As with a variety of Discover credit card offers, the Discover Ducks Unlimited Credit Card provides a variety of offers for first-timers, as well as benefits.  For example, the new and official Ducks Unlimited credit card not only supports wetland conservation, but also (like other Discover card options) provides everyday cashback bonuses and 5% cashback bonuses in certain categories. Categories may change during the year, but often include restaurants, gas, shopping, and more, up to a quarterly maximum (more on that in a bit). It doesn’t cost anything to sign up for the cashback bonus options but do be aware that you have to sign up every quarter. You can redeem your cashback rewards for dollars, with one cashback dollar equaling one US dollar, paid in $50 increments.

In addition to the 5% cashback on qualifying categories every quarter, credit cardholders can also earn 1% cashback (or more) on other purchases. Rewards can be used immediately at checkout.

The Discover card website provides a calendar that specifies what kinds of rewards are eligible and the dates of those cashback bonuses are available. For example, from January through March 2014, 5% cashback bonuses are available for restaurants and movies. The following categories include April through June, July through September, and October through December period. Discover may also apply cashback bonuses up to $1,500 in purchases for online shopping, but always check the terms and conditions as well as refer to information regarding cashback bonuses before you go out and spend.

The Discover card website claims that Discover card has ranked Number One in customer loyalty for 17 consecutive years, according to the 2013 Brand Keys Customer Loyalty and Engagement Index Report. Another positive perk associated with the Discover card partnered with Ducks Unlimited is a $0 annual fee. Discover card services also state that they may help you obtain a lower rate or lower payments if you happen to lose your job.

First-time card members don’t pay an annual fee, and may benefit from a 0% introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers. However, the 0% introductory APR lasts for 14 months on balance transfers and purchases, and then the standard variable purchase APR may apply and range between 10.99% and 22.99%, depending on your credit worthiness.  In addition, you may be charged a 3% fee for every balance transfer.

Here’s a few additional perks associated with the Ducks Unlimited Discover Card:

You get a free FICO score with your monthly statements, and round-the-clock customer service. One of the most popular and advertised perks of acquiring the Ducks Unlimited Discover Card is that your APR won’t go up if you make a late payment – but be aware that this is only for your first late payment. The same goes for late fees assessed to a first late payment. You don’t pay a fee for going over the limit, or for foreign transaction fees.

In addition to the above-mentioned perks, Discover cards, and the Ducks Unlimited Discover Card provides a variety of other benefits including:

  •  return guarantees
  • price protection
  • purchase protection
  • extended product warranties
  • 24/7 travel assistance
  • flight accident insurance
  • auto rental insurance
  • emergency roadside assistance
  • card personalization
  • multiple device account management

Call a customer service representative if you have any questions or concerns regarding the above perks, as well as any exclusions or limitations applied to them.

Let’s Talk about Rates

We already mentioned that the Ducks Unlimited Discover Card comes with an introductory 0% APR for 14 months following the account opening date. After that introductory period expires, you can expect to pay anywhere between 10.99% and 22.99% interest, depending on your credit worthiness.  The same goes for balance transfer APRs – no interest rate for the first 14 months, and that post to the opened account by March 10, 2014. Cash advances come with a 24.99% interest rate, but you don’t have to deal with penalty APRs. Still, take the time to research exemptions and exclusions that may apply to any of these rules regarding rates and fees – like many credit card providers, Discover may have options for altering rates and fees that you’re not aware of – unless you ask.

The Ducks Unlimited Discover Card does not charge an annual fee, but transaction fees are applied to balance transfers and cash advances. Balance transfers accrue at 3% of each transfer amount, and cash advance fees charged $10 or 5% of the amount of each cash advance, or whichever is larger. You won’t get charged for late payment the first time, but after that, you can expect a $35 penalty fee. Returned payment fees also charge $35.

Bottom Line – While the benefits and perks associated with the new Ducks Unlimited Discover Card are certainly attractive, it pays to read the fine print. Download and read the terms and conditions that apply to the Ducks Unlimited Discover Card, and remember that while the card is associated with a well-respected organization and brand (Ducks Unlimited, a global leader in waterfowl and wetlands conservation), it always pays to know well in advance what to expect from a credit card provider.
