Today we take a look at the M&T Visa Credit Card with Rewards, one of three credit cards offered by the American commercial bank, M&T. This credit rewards card will let the cardholder get rewarded for all qualifying purchases, both in-store and online and to earn points towards the usual plethora of rewards. Annual fee free and boasting many privileges, this particular card offers mainstream features and as the rewards card genre is getting a little same-y, we find ourselves asking; what can the M&T Visa Credit Card with Rewards offer us that’s different?
So, what’s fresh about the M&T Visa Credit Card with Rewards?
To begin with, the initial bonus points offer is a little on the plump side, M&T Visa Credit Card with Rewards gives you a massive 11,000 bonus points as long as you make $1,000 worth of purchases within the first 3 months. It’s not exactly fresh, but it’s pretty attractive.
The M&T Visa Credit Card with Rewards offers special discounts such as reduced or free shipping charges from major stores like Banana Republic and Ross and Simons, and percentage savings on items from stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Total Pet Supply. Some of these can be redeemed in-store or online and as these discounts are updated regularly, they may make committing to this card more than worthwhile.
Then M&T Visa Credit Card with Rewards offers Visa payWave. This allows cardholders to check out much quicker than usual at thousands of different merchants worldwide. Visa payWave works anywhere that accepts Visa and doesn’t require the card itself to leave your hand, completely obliterating the probability of credit card fraud with unique contactless technology, basically, a computer chip is embedded in the plastic of your card and will transmit your specific encrypted M&T APC (Account Payment Information) to a specific card reader. Okay, so again this is not exactly fresh, but it is still an attractive feature.
Cardholders can enjoy the relatively fresh feature of Overdraft Protection. All you need to do is link the card to your M&T checking account to activate it. By linking your accounts, M&T will automatically transfer any available funds from your credit card straight to your checking account if your funds are too low to cover transactions. This is an extremely helpful little feature, especially if you overspend regularly, are a tad forgetful, or if an unforeseeable payment occurs.
Give me the standard features.
As usual, here is the rundown of all of the M&T Visa Credit Card with Rewards’ standard features:
- 0% Introductory APR on balance transfers for 12 months with variable rates as low as 11.24%
- Absolutely no balance transfer fees
- After the intro period, balance transfers will be individually assessed and will equate to a fee of 4% (with a $10 minimum)
- Convenient account access; M&T offer account management options in the shape of mobile phone banking and M&T web banking

What’s the low-down on the bonus point scheme?
As with most credit cards of this type (i.e. the reward variety) cardholders can automatically earn 1 point per $1 for all purchases. Of course, some competing cards will offer double points, but it’s really not a big deal because M&T Visa Credit Card with Rewards cardholders can earn extra points at over 1,500 participating local and online retailers, through M&T Bank’s special Rewards Value Offers. Not many cards can offer bonus points when shopping online at stores such as Applebees and GAP, and when the latest special opt-in Value Offers appear, extra points will become available. There is also the possibility to earn annual points dividends of up to 35%. You can redeem points for:
Cash – if you want to keep it simple…
Travel – Flights, vacation packages, hotels, car rentals…
Shopping and Dining – Gift cards and gift certificates…
Merchandise – Electronic goods, sporting goods, home and garden furniture, gift items…
So is the M&T Visa Credit Card with Rewards the card for me, or shall I get another card?
The M&T Visa Credit Card with Rewards is pretty good. We see hundreds of cards and as a reward card guru; it takes a lot to impress someone who’s in the know. Does this card impress me? If I’m honest, I guess it does and it certainly holds its own against some of its major competitors. I am a huge proprietor of larger banks offering credit cards, because as a cardholder you can trust in the more established banks, but M&T seem to have it down. Some reviews report bad customer service, but everything needs to have a downside.
Seeing as this card has no annual fee, a good redeemable rewards scope and that really nice looking overdraft protection feature, it really does have a fighting chance to be the card for you. And then there’s the discount offers. These really are a nice feature of this card. Competitors offer special deals with certain retailers that equate to points bonuses for you, but not necessarily exclusive discounts from the stores themselves.
Of course, you need to weigh the options, as with any decision, but committing to this card doesn’t seem so bad an idea.
